A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - Scorpius/Various Potters [NC-17] by hollycomb.

hollycomb warns for crackfic, but honestly, I didn't interpret it that way. Sure, the premise has cracky undertones, but I found this to be more of a Scorpius character study - or, at the very least, a somewhat heartbreaking treatise on revenge.

The Malfoys have been libelled by a tell-all book, and Scorpius sets his sights on revenge - by, of all things, seducing the entire Potter clan for a tell-all of his own.

The bleeding heart in me wanted Scorpius to see the error of his ways sooner, that nothing good can ever come of revenge. But, on the other hand, the bitch in me had wished there were a few more Potters to debauch/mindfuck.

Still, I was very pleased with the ending. Scorpius had the right of things, the little bastard. *G*

HP Custom Brooms - Harry/Scorpius [NC-17] by marguerite_26.

I had originally passed this by during the hp_nextgen_fest, and now I'm glad I went back on snegurochka_lee's rec. I'd noticed a few people question Harry's profession as a broom maker, and I was a bit gobsmacked by that. Personally, I love when writers give their characters careers other than what's expected. Harry makes an able broom maker, and I love the little magical extras Marguerite shares that separates Harry from his competition.

Enter the Malfoys. Draco commissions Harry to make Scorpius a broom, and Scorpius is just a right pain in the arse the week he's needed for measurements. Tempers flare and sparks fly and a strange attraction grows, made worse by a magical bond to strengthen the broom's flying charms.

Best thing about this fic? Harry's note to Scorpius at the end.

A Series of Peculiar Mondays - Teddy/Draco, Harry/Draco [NC-17] by Anon Author.

I instantly loved this fic, and I usually frown upon non-PWPs that shove you face first into a sex scene. Teddy's an Auror-trainee and one by one, the seasoned Aurors go missing. Including Harry. Admittedly, I had to suspend my disbelief on some of the subject matter, and if infidelity's an issue for you, you're going to have trouble with this. But the Harry/Draco dynamic twisted my senses into delicious knots, and I was really impressed with the complexities of Harry's magical wards. I would love to see a sequel to this. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing who wrote this and possibly discovering a new author - or loving an older one all over again. *G*

Dear Old-School Pairings,

I think I am going through a midlife crisis. Seriously, it's getting harder and harder to even look at you guys anymore. I'll never leave you, of course, but I can't promise I won't stray now and then.

You can blame my foul and evil friends. Certainly, they are in part to blame for my indiscretions. But mostly, I've been restless and wanting to sew my next-gen oats. Is that so wrong?

Knowing you, you'll want me to name my affairs so you can confront your competition. Wouldn't that be terribly cruel of me? Must you be such a glutton for punishment? Well, all right, if you insist it will make us both stronger.

There were those times with Harry/Scorpius in that cheap motel. Slut? Moi? Oh Chères, I told you this would be painful.

And well, there were trysts with Teddy/James, James/Scorpius and Teddy/Scorpius. I might even have had a few weekends with Teddy/Scorpius. But I promise you I did not take Teddy/Scorpius to our weekend retreat.

Okay, well, maybe once. What can I say? I'm only human after all.

I'll return to you once more. In the end, I always do. But right now, I'm a ways from home, and I'm enjoying the scenic route.

Bothersome Things - Percy/Teddy and Charlie/Teddy [R] by Anon Author.

This is now the third fic I've read in the course of three months with Charlie Weasley.

Moreover, the third fic in three months with Charlie Weasley I've liked.

Clearly, I'm a pod person, the devil is practicing his triple salchows and pigs have taken flight :P

So, why am I reccing this fic?

Simple. I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised.

Percy Weasley is newly divorced, and the reason his wife leaves him is because he thinks of her as a job he can be good at. Now, I ask you? How perfectly nerdly is that? This writer has Percy down to a science - from his work ethic to the way he clumsily stumbles over his words to the way he timidly pines for Lupin the younger.

Enter Charlie Weasley, all muscle and swagger, who also has eyes for Teddy too, and well, you have sibling rivalry like whoa.

The best thing about this fic is that Albus Severus narrates, and he's riotously entertaining. Al's aces at storytelling, and he has this way of saying what you're thinking right at the moment you're thinking it. It's rather brilliant the way the author makes that connection between her narrator and her audience. It's a surprisingly quick read for 10k, but a highly enjoyable one.

I'm hoping this fic won't suffer any despite the pairing and the warnings. But for those of you who enjoy your cross-gen well... very crossed, I encourage you to give this a go.

Mirrormancy and worlds beyond the pane have always held a strange fascination for me. The idea isn't new. It's been a part of sci-fi for as long as I can recall, but the concept never tires.

Here, Snape and Albus Severus share voyeuristic tendencies that inevitably create trust -- and a very real bond. But who's on what side of the mirror becomes the real question.

Gah, when I last looked at this fic, it had maybe 20 comments. There seems to have been an AS/Splosion of reccing. *G*

This fic is highly entertaining in that I chuckled throughout. Some fics make the characters, while some characters make the fic. This is clearly an example of the latter. I love the boys and their adolescent confusions, but Lily the younger steals the scenes as matchmaker.

My intial reaction to this fic's comment count was, 'Jesus, what a fucking travesty, this fic is beautiful.'

Unfortunately, with so many fests, well-written gems like this get lost in the shuffle. But, oh what a fabulous discovery this was. A Parisian setting, character complexities and some wonderfully drawn relationships involving Draco and his family set this fic apart from so many other Snaco fics. And, I'm a hopeless sucker for Snape and his cigarettes.

To top if off (pun intended), Draco's the trouser-wearer in his relationship with Severus, and it's done believably and flawlessly.

I'm giving this 5 engine revs on the Ninja. This is a seriously satisfying read.

I am just a little bit in love with this fic. Well, okay, maybe I'm a lot in love with this fic.

Ever since I wrote 'We'll Always Have Paris', I've been obsessed with the idea of Harry and Draco either on holiday in Japan or living there.

Here's a delicious excerpt from ATP:

That night, they bathe in Kabukichou neon, looking for a lead. They do more kissing than looking, and Draco starts to wonder if it was such a great idea to pair them up after all. Their particular brand of resolving differences doesn't allow for much time doing anything else.

They're standing outside a love hotel, trying to decide if the kanji on its sign match the scrap of paper Harry was given yesterday.

That - made me crave a bowl of udon noodles. And it made my toes curl something fierce. Mmm! *G*

The fic is broken up into several vignettes, all of which are different scenarios based on lillithium's art. It's quite involved for such a short fic (5000 words), but it's perfect. I wouldn't have added or subtracted a word. I'm giving this fic five engine revs from the Ninja. Seriously, I highly recommend this.

For Whatever Ails You [NC-17] by Anon Author.

Nothing is more endearing to me than letter writing or prose in fics. I think it takes a special kind of talent to express feeling through word alone.

That said, there are poems throughout this sexy-fun-romantic romp, and I couldn't have enjoyed the slow build-up or the execution any more than I did. Draco's a perfect prickly bastard here, and the dynamic's heartwarming yet genuine. This author really knows how to put the boys together and keep them in character.

Oh, and did I mention there's rimming, and it's scorchingly hot?

Simply stated; this fic is exceptional. Note the inflection, bébés.

The writing is so first class that it would stand out in a line of one-hundred well written fics. It's poetically stitched together with such care and such charm you'd swear it was sewn with a golden needle and angel-hair threading.

Oh, and if you really want to win over my not-so-easily-won-over-heart, describe a character's clothing, particularly a pair of boots to an admitted fetishist.

He assessed the young man's clothing. Now when would they realise over here that monochromes did a man no favours? The young fellow wore black trousers and a black overcoat, with a white shirt that made him look washed-out and a charcoal-grey waistcoat that admittedly did acceptable things for his silhouette. The clothing was of passable quality but obviously off the rack. He looked down. Muggles seemed to wander into the square quite regularly, to the apparent alarm of no one but himself, but you could always tell a wizard by his boots. These were black dragonhide, not new but obviously well cared for. Square-toed, size eight. Dibs of Diagon's Reims model, if he wasn't mistaken, only...

Need I say more?

And as if I wasn't clear enough, I HIGHLY recommend this fic. Seriously, cast aside your Slughorn prejudices. I've never seen such an accurate yet appealing characterisation of Ol' Sluggy.

It's funny how things work sometimes.

A week ago, I'd never heard of 'Wicked Gentlemen' by Ginn Hale. Yes, I'm slow on the uptake and made of the suck :P

For those of you that are as clueless as I am, it's a m/m Steampunk fantasy novel.

Two days ago, melusinahp asked me over IM if I'd heard of the book.

The same day I noticed that who_la_hoop was looking for a copy of WG.

Apparently, my flist has been abuzz about this book. Quite unbeknownst to me.

So, what should arrive via snail mail today? A copy of Wicked Gentlemen sent to me by the lovely frantic_mice.

And let me tell you, this book looks POSITIVELY FABULOUS. *G*
